In 2014, the German carmaker BMW presented its new brainchild - the charged M4 sports coupe, which received a large number of flattering reviews not only from fans of the brand, but also from world-renowned automotive critics.

The car stood out for its stylish and aggressive appearance, as well as excellent technical characteristics, but the Germans did not think this was enough, and a year later, as part of the automobile elegance competition in Pebble Beach, the company presents a pre-production version of the M4 GTS track modification. The official debut of the novelty took place in the fall of 2015 at the Tokyo Auto Show, while BMW representatives immediately warned that the car would be presented in a limited edition of only 700 cars, and its release was timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the BMW M3.

In comparison with the standard M4 sports coupe, the novelty received a number of significant technical improvements, an exclusive plastic body kit and an innovative water injection system for BMW models, which positively affected the power and dynamic characteristics of the car. Perhaps the only drawback of the new BMW M4 GTS is the price, but first things first.

Exterior BMW M4 GTS

The appearance of the two-door GTS coupe almost completely repeats that of the M4 coupe, which can be safely called one of the most attractive cars in the class. The "muzzle" of the car is represented by aggressive head optics with LED elements, large "nostrils" that play the role of a false radiator grille, as well as three air intake windows mounted in the massive front bumper.

Special attention should be paid to the presence of an adjustable front splitter, whose task is to improve the aerodynamics and downforce of the car, as well as the original air intake located on the hood, which, by the way, is completely made of carbon fiber.

The profile of the car has the classic proportions for a sports coupe: a long bonnet, a domed roofline and a lean stern with a special adjustable wing. The car is shod with low-profile Michelin tires, and alloy wheels have a dimension of 265/35 R19 at the front, 285/30 R20 at the rear.

The rear of the car has an extremely menacing look, which is facilitated by a massive rear bumper, an original diffuser and four tailpipes of the exhaust system. It should also be noted that the sports coupe has been equipped with innovative side lights that use organic OLED LEDs. These diodes differ from conventional ones in that they provide a uniform glow over the entire area, and also have a small height, which allows you to create a completely new design of optics. The company believes that OLED is the technology of the future, which will herald a new era in the development of design and functionality of lighting technology.

The dimensions of the new items are almost identical to those in the BMW M4 and are:

  • Length - 4671 mm;
  • Width - 1870 mm;
  • Height - 1383 mm, which is almost 50 mm less than the sedan;
  • Wheelbase - 2812 mm.


A few words should be said about the weight of the car, which was reduced by 80 kg, which was achieved through the abundant use of carbon fiber, aluminum and titanium. Thus, the weight of the coupe was reduced to 1,510 kg.

In addition, the car received four exclusive body colors Sapphire Black metallic, Alpine White, Mineral Gray metallic and Frozen Dark Gray Metallic, which are not available to regular M4 owners.

The architecture of the front panel of the GTS version is identical to that of the standard M4, which does not make it less attractive. The interior is replete with exceptionally high-quality finishing materials, and the fit of all parts and elements is beyond praise.

Directly in front of the driver is a stylish 3-spoke steering wheel with the ability to control the on-board computer and the car's audio system, as well as a highly informative instrument panel. In the upper part of the central dashboard there is a large touchscreen display of the multimedia complex, below which there is a block of original air ducts, as well as control units for the audio system and the microclimate in the cabin.

When creating the interior of the M4 GTS, the manufacturer pursued the philosophy of maximum weight reduction, as a result, instead of the standard seats, the car is equipped with bucket-shaped carbon seats, the weight of which is almost 2 times less than the standard ones. They provide an excellent fit and have perfect lateral support, however, they are devoid of any electrical adjustments.

Moreover, the rear sofa was removed in the car, instead of which a special protective half-frame made of reinforced carbon fiber was placed. Instead of classic door handles, special reinforced hinges are used, and most of the interior elements are finished in Alcantara.

The luggage compartment volume is 445 liters, which is slightly inferior to the luggage compartment volume of the M3 sedan, but in general it allows a sufficient amount of luggage. At the same time, do not forget that we have a special track car that made Porsche quite nervous with their 385-horsepower Cayman GT4, which until recently ruled the show in this class of cars.

Unlike the standard BMW M4, equipped with a 3.0-liter 431-horsepower gasoline engine, the GTS version received a 500-horsepower engine of the same size. The main feature of the engine was the presence of a unique technology of direct injection of water, thanks to which the manufacturer managed not only to increase the power, but also to increase the stability of the engine. BMW also believes that this technology will significantly increase the life of the powertrain.

The engine is aggregated by an innovative 7-speed robotic gearbox with two clutches and Drivelogic technology, which together with the forced engine provides an acceleration from 0 to 100 in just 3.8 seconds, which is 0.3 seconds. faster than a regular M4.

The top speed has also increased from 250 to 305 km / h. However, the main features of the GTS version are revealed on the track. Thus, the circle on the famous track in the Nurburgring is 20 seconds faster than the usual BMW M4, which repeats the high-speed capabilities of the McLaren MP4-12C supercar, which plays in a completely different league.

Despite the increased power, the fuel consumption of the car has practically not increased and varies between 8.8-9.5 l / 100 km in the combined cycle. Of course, the situation changes somewhat on the track, however, this is quite predictable.


The sports coupe is equipped with a sports helical suspension with a choice of three modes of operation, modified stabilizers, as well as special steering knuckles made from a single piece of aluminum. Effective braking is provided by a carbon-ceramic braking system installed on all four wheels.

Safety

The BMW M4 GTS, as befits a modern sports coupe, is equipped with a large number of systems responsible for the passive and active safety of passengers:

  • Advanced anti-lock braking system;
  • Assistant when changing lanes of the car;
  • Tracking system for "dead" zones, as well as warnings about a possible collision with a pedestrian;
  • Frontal collision warning function, capable of automatically stopping the car if there is no reaction from the driver;
  • Parking assistant;
  • 360-degree view system;
  • Six-point seat belts;
  • Front and side airbags;
  • Special semi-safety cage installed behind the front seats;
  • Fire extinguishing system and much more.


Also, according to the manufacturer, the coupe has special deformation zones designed to dampen the impact energy in the event of an accident.

Options and price of the 2016 BMW M4 GTS

Despite the fact that the BMW M4 GTS is an exclusive version of the car for the track, where the main emphasis is on the sports component, the sports coupe received a large list of standard equipment, which included:

  • LED headlights as well as innovative side lights with OLED LEDs;

Recall that the price of a standard BMW M4 coupe starts at 88.8 thousand dollars (about 4.075 million rubles) and can reach 105 thousand dollars (about 6.5 million rubles) in top-end equipment, which is simply not lets you call the model available. However, these figures pale against the background of the cost of the limited GTS-version, the price of which starts at 11.065 million rubles, or almost 181 thousand dollars.

A total of 700 copies of the BMW M4 GTS have been produced in the world, of which only four cars entered the territory of the Russian Federation.

Conclusion

The BMW M4 GTS is a unique car that has absorbed the best sporting achievements of the automaker, which are fully manifested on the race track. It is a vehicle perfectly prepared for the extreme conditions of the racetrack as well as for everyday use on public roads.
